چکیده

[1] The formulation of suitable boundary conditions at the water-ice interface during ice formation (melting) is an important aspect of the sea-ice coupled model. The transfer of water and salt through the water-ice can be posed as different boundary conditions. Behavior of the model under these boundary conditions is illustrated through simple analytical models and a numerical model based on pressure-h coordinate. It is emphasized that the correct handling of the boundary conditions associated with sea ice formation requires an accurate treatment of the equivalent pressure on the top of water column and the total volume (mass) of the water column in the ice formation regime. Improper treatment of these boundary conditions may lead to an artificial loop current near the edge of ice in numerical simulations of oceanic circulation in the Arctic Ocean or near the Antarctica.

Effects of Slip Condition on the Characteristic of Flow in Ice Melting Process

In this paper a laminar flow of water on an ice layer subjected to a slip condition is considered numerically. The paper describes a parametric mathematical model to simulate the coupled heat and mass transfer events occurring in moving boundary problems associated with a quasi steady state steady flow process. The discretization technique of the elliptic governing differential equations of mas...

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE The Effect of a Large Freshwater Perturbation on the Glacial North Atlantic Ocean Using a Coupled General Circulation Model

The commonly held view of the conditions in the North Atlantic at the last glacial maximum, based on the interpretation of proxy records, is of large-scale cooling compared to today, limited deep convection, and extensive sea ice, all associated with a southward displaced and weakened overturning thermohaline circulation (THC) in the North Atlantic. Not all studies support that view; in particu...

Sea Ice Eeects on the Sensitivity of the Thermohaline Circulation

We investigate the sensitivity of the thermohaline circulation (THC) with respect to a subpolar salinity perturbation. Such perturbation simulates a fresh water release caused by retreating glaciers or anomalous sea ice. The feedback mechanisms amplifying or damping the initial anomaly are analyzed in the coupled ocean-atmospheresea ice model. Their understanding is essential for modelling clim...

Non-Darcian Mixed Convection Flow in Vertical Composite Channels with Hybrid Boundary Conditions

In this article, the effects of viscous dissipation and inertial force on the velocity and temperature distributions of the mixed convection laminar flow in a vertical channel partly filled with a saturated porous medium have been studied. In this regard, the Brinkman–Forchheimer extended Darcy model was adopted for the fluid flow in the porous region. In addition, three different viscous dissi...

Arctic Ocean sea ice response to Northern Annular Mode-like wind forcing

[1] The response of the Arctic Ocean sea ice system to Northern Annular Mode-like wind forcing has been investigated using an ocean/sea ice general circulation model coupled to an atmospheric boundary layer model. A series of idealized experiments was performed to investigate the Arctic Ocean’s response to idealized winter wind anomalies on interannual to multi-decadal time scales. The sea ice ...
